Chapter Assessment Program

It has been quite a while since my last post, and i accredit this delay to a very busy, but successful semester. I received my highest GPA as a student yet and am proud to say the chapter has been just as busy.

The University of Delaware Greek System uses a Chapter Assessment Program (CAP) to assess each chapter to ensure each chapter attends and runs philantrophic and community service events, attends diversity, education and culturally enriching programs, and maintains discipline and risk reduction within the chapter. This program has made U of D's Greek System among the elite in the country, and i am proud to annouce we received a Silver rating.

The scores are kept as following:
Gold - must be nearly perfect!
Silver - more than satisfactory performance across the board
Bronze - satisfactory Performance
Unsatisfactory - loss of social privileges until higher level has been achieved

With the help of all of our new guys and an ambitious and motivated Executive Board, this semester looks to be promising!

I hope that i am able to post more often about our chapter's activities and ongoing success!

The Votes Are In!

Each year we as a chapter must vote to elect our Executive Board, who is in charge of making sure our fraternity accomplishes all that it must during each year, and better the fraternity in all possible ways. It is also the responsibility of this Board to be leaders on campus, as well as to the younger brothers that seek guidance. I would like to thank last year's Executive Board for their time and effort that has given us the opportunity to fill some pretty big shoes. Without further ado, I would now like to announce our new Executive Board:

Eminent Archon (President) - Alex Leibson
Eminent Deputy Archon (Vice President) - Lee Procida
Eminent Treasurer - Robert Zelniker
Eminent Recorder - Brett Itzkovitz
Eminent Warden (Disciplinary)- Eric Mollo
Eminent Chronicler (Historian)- Kyle Faehner
Eminent Herald (Ritual) - Reza Shiek
Eminent Preceptor (Ritual)- Zachary Sansone
Eminent Chaplain (Spiritual Leader) - Nick Alarif

All of these positions were voted in via the chapter, and I wish them all good luck in pursuing a greater good for the fraternity!

TO THE SAE UNDERGRADUATE:

Who by the cultivation
of all that is pure
in a man's nature
and character
will achieve the ideals
of his fraternity.

And so they have! I am proud to announce that the Fall Pledge Class of 2005, The Sigma Alpha's, have been initiated into the Delaware Alpha Chapter in the Rho-eta Province as the 27th pledge class. Starting with eleven members, and finishing strong with ten, we as a fraternity can proudly say that our new members are fully knowledgable in our beloved order, and have now been deemed worthy to carry the secrets and burdens of our national organization. With this responsibility comes great rewards, such as everlasting brotherhood, alumni relations, job opportunities, and countless others. To the new members of Delaware Alpha, I leave you with this:

I'm Phi Alpha born
and I'm Phi Alpha bred
and when i die, i'll be
Phi Alpha dead,
so rah, rah, Phi Alpha Alpha
Rah, rah Phi Alpha Alpha
Rah, rah, Phi Alpha,
S-A-E!

Famous SAE's

Throughout history Sigma Alpha Epsilon has developed brotherhood and friendships of the deepest loyalty and sincerity. Once a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, there is no prior judgments as to the character of an individual, but rather with a handshake and display of knowledge of our fraternal oats, full respect and admiration is received, regardless of affluence or power. With this said, over the course of our history many of our brothers have become affluent, famous, and nationally recognizable for their life achievements. These brothers, such as the ones scrolling on this webpage, have given back to the fraternity that gave so much to them in their quest for knowledge and success in this difficult world by representing thousands of others. They have also given much to our country, such as General Richard Myers, Dr. Robert Ballard, Eliot Ness, Richard W. Riley, and William Mckinley, our Nation’s twenty-fifth President. Along with these names includes countless number of famous athletes, CEO’s, authors, and actors.

Fraternity Motto: What We Stand For

As I have mentioned in previous posts, our fraternity is rich with history dating back to the Civil War. Our Creed has stood just as long, and it is what our nationwide brotherhood abides by. It is entitled "The True Gentleman" By John Walter Wayland, and was written in Virginia in 1899:

The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and who self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or anyman of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor sacred and virtue safe.

This grammatically correct single sentence is the guiding spirit of our fraternity, and each line has its own important lesson in living life as a gentleman. If you'd like to get a more in depth description behind the meaning of The True Gentleman,

New Member Education

This past week has been an exciting time for our fraternity, as we welcome eleven new members into our education program. Over the course of the next six weeks, our neophites will explore the depths of a our secret society and develop bonds of brotherhood with our Chapter members. Our fraternity has been in existence for 149 years, and these new members have the distinct honor to be initiated during our 150th year celebration. If there is any interest in viewing what Sigma Alpha Epsilon will be doing for this celebration, please visit our national website! If there is any interest in developing more knowledge on our local chapter please visit our website.

HOMECOMING WEEK!

This week begins the most anticipated and exciting week in the fall semester Homecoming week! The school shows it's pride with banner competitions, pep rallies, football booster events, and greek events. As the Homecoming chair for Sigma Alpha Epsilon I have had a very stressful week planning what will be our most lavish homecoming in years. Thanks to an extremely generous Alumni Donation, we have events planned all week.
This monday we will have a barbeque from 5-7 PM at our house with our sorority of choice, Alpha Xi Delta, followed by a 4-way mixer with Alpha Xi Delta, Chi Omega, and Kappa Alpha. This should be a great kick off to our week! Our next event is not until Thursday, but this is where Homecoming week truly begins. We will have a mixer with Alpha Xi Delta at Gallucio's in Wilmington where great drink specials should make for an interesting evening!
Friday, thanks again to our generous alumni donation, we will have TGIFriday's restuarant cater our barbeque! Last but certainly not least is Homecoming Saturday. Our football team faces off against the Hofstra Pride at 1 PM, but our day begins much earlier! Sigma Alpha Epsilon as well as Alpha Xi Delta will begin tailgating bright and early. After tailgating and watching our UD Blue Hens beat Hofstra, We will return to our Fraternity House where Cleveland subs will be catering yet another barbeque! All in all the work that has been exerted for this week certainly warrants some celebration! GO UD FOOTBALL!

Recruitment Week

Over the past few decades, "fraternities" have partially earned the reputation that proceeds them from communities, universities, and peers. Movies such as "Animal House" give a misperception as to the true honor, friendship, and leadership that they develop. The history and brotherhood of some fraternities date back to before the civil war, including my fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, which was founded in 1856. Over the past 150 years, 282 Chapters have formed at Universities all over the country, and over a quarter million brothers have been initiated. The Insignia that represents our fraternity, a badge in which there lies a lion, the greek letters Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and Phi Alpha, are individually numbered, and I was the 274, 690 brother to be initiated into the brotherhood of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. As a pledge to this fraternity I learned of the great history and comrodary of past presidents (William McKinley), prohibition agents (Eliot Ness), CEO's(Chris Sullivan, Outback Steakhouse) and olympians (Bradley Schmacher) just to name a few!

Sigma Alpha Epsilon

At the University of Delaware the fraternal system requires that each fraternity meet certain requirements to remain active on campus. Many of these requirements include philantrophy, attending events, and supporting other student organizations (both greek and non-greek) to develop better campus diversity, community service, and commitment to the town that services the entire campus by allowing us to reside. What better way to show our appreciation than to give back to our community!
