Fraternity Motto: What We Stand For

As I have mentioned in previous posts, our fraternity is rich with history dating back to the Civil War. Our Creed has stood just as long, and it is what our nationwide brotherhood abides by. It is entitled "The True Gentleman" By John Walter Wayland, and was written in Virginia in 1899:

The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and who self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or anyman of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor sacred and virtue safe.

This grammatically correct single sentence is the guiding spirit of our fraternity, and each line has its own important lesson in living life as a gentleman. If you'd like to get a more in depth description behind the meaning of The True Gentleman,

A gentleman does not look down on others. A gentleman does not perceive another as 'inferior' or 'deformed' or any of the other condescending observances noted in this creed. And, moreover, even if you were to accept everything in this creed as valid, the very fact that SAE has, in recent years, perpetrated such heinous and hideous conduct exhibiting racism and hate is the epitome of ignorance.

And this is not limited to OU. This is a virus that has been allowed to fester and grow within SAE across the nation. Love SAE? If you truly 'love SAE', you don't spout a bunch of lip service about how the creed is words to live by (which the entire fraternity, nationwide, seems to have failed to do). No. If you TRULY love your fraternity, you owe it to yourselves and your next generation of brothers to clean up the system. Clean up your house. Grow beyond the ignorance and racism so prevalent today. If you love your fraternity, you will aggressively move to help the fraternity system get rid of the haters and remake it into something to truly be proud of.

"foundation as true gentlemen"? What SAE has exhibited, at least for the past few decades, has been anything but gentlemanly. And anyone who can condone such behavior is anything but a gentleman!
